The best-selling female artist of all time - whose eighteen #1 singles rival all but The Beatles - Mariah Carey has made an indelible impact on the global music industry and audiences everywhere. Blessed with a stunning five-octave range and signature vocal abilities, the singularly talented superstar continues to reach new heights of artistic growth and popularity. As a singer and songwriter, she has been recognized with five Grammy Awards, nine American Music Awards, Billboard's "Artist of the Decade" Award and the World Music Award for "World's Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium," to name but a few honors. Carey's most recent album is also her most intimate, a frank portrayal of both the challenges and successes experienced throughout her rise to fame. Released in April 2005, The Emancipation of Mimi (Island Def Jam) strongly resonated with audiences, becoming that year's best-selling album in the U.S. and selling more than eight million units worldwide to date. While capturing three Grammys for Best Contemporary R&B Album, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song, Carey broke... more?

"A lot of the time they (the media) form the idea in listeners' minds. Calling me a 'pop diva' without listening to my work so when I come out with an urban song it's like, 'Pop diva goes black.' I mean, pur-lease. "

Mariah Carey More Like Celine, Less Like Aretha
5 Feb 2010; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Some might still call it rhythm 'n' blues, but it's really the genre's hip-hop-influenced, weaned-on-pop grandchild that Mariah Carey offered to 7,000 fawning fans Thursday night at a suitably shrunken Bell Centre. As the multimillion-selling, statistic-breaking singer proved one more time, R&B might have become more of a brand name than a meaningful style.

At its best, Carey's music is infectious and cannily persuasive enough to do the form justice. Even after 13 years, you'd have to be a hopeless purist not to be seduced by Always Be My Baby, which was mostly delivered as Carey reclined invitingly in a love seat. And if the hook in Obsessed or the sweet, anthemic We Belong Together don't do anything at all for you, maybe you're just not being fair. Not to forget Touch My Body, an irresistibly catchy song, effective even without the video antics of 30 Rock's Jack McBrayer.

But at its worst, well, God help us. Mawkish muck like the dreadful Hero, which closed the concert, or the over-emoting in the inspirational but uninspired ballad Fly Like A Bird place Carey more in Céline Dion territory than in Aretha country.

Yet maybe that chasm is not as great as we assume. Sure, Carey is a diva. But so is Aretha, who, for all her brilliance, really spawned all the vocal excess of this generation of R&B singers. Carey even had the sense of humour to playfully send up her image Thursday night, after Always Be My Baby, by having two flunkies come out to dab her face and touch up her hair. "Wouldn't you do the same if you were me?" she asked, to cheers. The star and the little people is, as always, the operative dynamic in a Carey concert.

Incidentally, it's hard to figure out why the on-stage freshening up would have been needed, even in jest. Carey is not what one would call an energetic performer: finger waves and slinky hand gestures are about it. Her dancers - numbering between three and 10, depending on song requirements - shouldered most of the physicality and visuals.

Should we chalk it up to fatigue? Starting a full hour after she was scheduled to go on, Carey waited a few numbers before apologizing and explaining that she had been up late shooting a video to raise funds for Haiti and got little sleep. The audience members - pretty soldily in the thirtysomething range - quickly forgave the fact that they would lose an hour's sleep themselves and showered her with love.

If you knock off about 15 minutes total Carey spent off stage for a costume change, she performed for about 70 minutes. With top ticket prices reaching $130 plus extras, it wouldn't be unfair to raise the question of value for money. But Carey's fans answered it with adoration. And we didn't come to argue.

A Diva at 40
5 Feb 2010; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Less than two months from now, Mariah Carey will turn 40 years old and will have spent half of that time in the public eye, weathering career highs and lows. Having moved enough units to grant her the title of best selling artist of the '90s and staging a commercial comeback in the mid-'00s after the double edged catastrophe that was 2001's "Glitter" and 2002's "Charmbracelet", Carey can follow in the footsteps of many a diva past and present and coast on her past accomplishments.

Sales of her most recent effort, last year's "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel", have been respectable given the lackluster state of affairs in the record selling biz in the last few years. Yet it's still fallen short of expectations given her past track record. The first single from the set, "Obsessed", was a success, but subsequent offerings, including her cover of Foreigner's schmaltz-pop ballad "I Want to Know What Love Is", fell off the radar seemingly as soon as it first blipped.

Given this, along with her forthcoming two decade anniversary as a pop culture entity and the scheduled release of a "Memoirs" remix set in the next two months, it's easy to see Carey following in the footsteps of fellow '90s pop powerhouse Celine Dion and Elton John, moving her operations to Las Vegas for a year-plus stand.

Surprisingly, though, Carey's greatest triumph in the last few years was on the big screen in a supporting role in 2009's critically acclaimed "Precious". While it's not enough for us here at Tunes and Tix to cease mocking what we see as her multi-octave shrill or stop testing our gag reflex by seeing how many minutes of "Glitter" we can endure before scrambling for the remote, it's a promising direction. That's something many a veteran diva would give an octave for at this particular stage.

At press time, limited tickets were available for Carey's February 13 and 14 shows at Chicago Theatre.

Mariah Carey's Husband: "She Hates It When I'm Messy"
5 Feb 2010; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Mariah Carey hates it when her husband slobs out at home. "She hates when I'm messy when it has to do with her nice stuff," Nick Cannon told Entertainment Weekly. "Like, I can't throw my jacket on the Marilyn Monroe piano - but I do."

Cannon recently revealed that he and Carey will - eventually - start a family. "We absolutely plan to have a family," he told MTV. "But we gotta prioritize, because that's a major, major priority. That's like the only priority in life, when you think about it, is starting and raising a family. We want to make sure everything is out of the way and that we don't have any distractions. She's on tour right now, I'm doing a bunch of stuff, so eventually we want to be able to say it's time to have a kid, and set everything up. But we're definitely moving toward."

The Adventures Of Mariah
5 Feb 2010; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Mariah Carey was overlooked in this week's Oscar nominations, took a pass on the Grammys and won't be singing at the Superbowl this weekend. And what about that incident in Florida last month? The pop superstar gave a rambling acceptance speech at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, leading to widespread speculation that she was drunk. Millions watched the online video depicting the elegantly dressed Carey. Smiling sweetly, she stumbled over her words and cut off sentences with a throaty laugh as she accepted the "Breakthrough Actress Performance" award for her role in Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire.

What's going on with Mimi, fans wondered. Are we seeing the exalted diva fade, ungracefully, from the limelight? Far from it, I'd say. As she begins the year of her 40th birthday, the five-octave singer is a creative dynamo who appears to be making the most of her charmed existence. Her worst sin right now might be that she's having too much fun.

Among Carey's many reasons to celebrate are a happy marriage, a hit album, a new fragrance and the satisfaction of a job well done for her role in the movie Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire. She plays a social worker, a gig that required her to skip the makeup and fancy clothes. Although Carey wasn't nominated for an Oscar for her excellent performance, the film is up for six awards, including best picture, and she picked up an award for "Breakthrough Actress Performance" at the Palm Springs festival. Carey has also embarked on a major tour, her first in three years, pulling into Scotiabank Place Saturday. Remarkably, it's her first concert in the nation's capital. The "Angels Advocate" excursion follows the release of her 12th studio album, the aptly titled Confessions of an Imperfect Angel, which went to No. 1 on Billboard's R&B charts and inspired People magazine editors to declare her one of the top 10 most intriguing people of 2009.

The disc is one of her better ones, by the way, full of slow R&B jams and big ballads, including a gospel-drenched cover of the 1980s Foreigner nugget, I Want to Know What Love Is. As for the love of her life, Carey has been married for about a year and a half to Nick Cannon, the multi-media rapper/comedian/entertainment mogul who's a decade younger than Carey. In a recent interview with Elle magazine, she's described as a "smitten newlywed". He bought her a chalet in Aspen, CO for Christmas last year, and a puppy.

Really, the only reason fans might be worried about her tipsy on-camera behaviour is because she's been there before, and it wasn't a pretty sight. In 2001, Carey had a breakdown, reportedly brought on by overwork and lack of sleep. Her behaviour became erratic, and not long after her infamous striptease during an MTV interview, she was admitted to a New York hospital for supervised care.

"The funny thing is, when I realize how young I was when I first started in this business, and how it was all crazy and nothing seemed real; I sort of haven't taken a break since then," she said in an interview before the emotional collapse. "So it all seems like one continuous day."

Until that point, Carey life's followed a Cinderella-like arc. Born in Long Island, NY, the daughter of an Irish-American mother and Afro-Venezuelan-American father, her parents divorced when she was three. Carey was raised by her mom, who worked three jobs but also liked to sing opera. After hearing little Mariah imitate her, Mama Carey began teaching her to sing.

Carey signed her first recording contract at 17. At 23, she married Tommy Mottola, the much older music-industry exec who discovered her at a party. Although he helped guide her career to superstardom with her first album, the marriage lasted less than five years. She later described him as controlling.

With her first album, Carey helped define the genre of contemporary R&B, taking it into the mainstream with slickly produced love songs like Vision of Love and Love Takes Time, both from her chart-topping, Grammy-winning 1990 self-titled debut. The disc sold millions around the world.

After the split with Mottola, Carey began to introduce elements of hip hop into her music. Between 1997 and 2002, a string of albums with girlie names - Butterfly, Rainbow, Glitter and Charmbracelet - found Carey collaborating with rappers and hip-hop producers. Sales began to slide, though, along with the rest of the music industry, and Carey lost her record deal. She kept writing.

In 2005, Carey released The Emancipation of Mimi, her songwriting energized by the influence of '70s and '80s soul and disco. A bevy of Grammy Awards marked her comeback as a pop superstar, and the monster hit, We Belong Together, was declared the song of the decade by Billboard magazine.

Clearly, things have been going well. Carey also has a remix album due next month and is part of Simon Cowell's fundraising single for Haiti, an all-star version of REM's Everybody Hurts that also features Susan Boyle and Leona Lewis. So let's not judge the American diva too harshly over her latest display of poor judgement. She's an artist, after all, with the passion and drama of all artists. And besides, she was probably promoting her new line of champagne to everyone at the table that night.

Courtney Love and Mariah Carey Almost Collaborated
1 Feb 2010; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

In the chorus of "Samantha", the rocking first single off Hole's forthcoming "Nobody's Daughter" album, the refrain goes "People like you f--- people like me." After writing the track, Courtney Love invited a few of her rocker friends, including Billy Corgan and Gerard Way, who unfortunately didn't check his voice mail, to "come scream-sing", as Love puts it. While her rocker friends didn't work out, Love found a willing participant when she went to see film director Brett Ratner.

"I'm at his house and I sing the part, 'People like you f--- people like me'," Love tells Spinner. "And this little voice goes, 'I'll sing it.' I'm like, 'Who's that?' The voice goes, 'It's Mariah.'" As in, Mariah Carey.

Love says the encounter was as fun as fans might imagine. "Mariah's got a vocal coach with her, she's an industry unto herself, and we sat on Brett's couch and we watched on a screen these size five Mariah Carey videos he made," she says. "And it was hysterical. I never met Mariah for more than a minute in my life, but we sort of canceled each other out. We had nothing negative about each other to say. I'm not in her universe and she's not in mine."

While the two got along fine, there were some moments where their personalities clashed. "When you go to Brett's house you always have to take a picture in the photo strip booth. She sat down next to me and she moved me over," Love says, laughing. "This has never happened in my entire life. There are a lot of alpha males, but there aren't a lot of alpha females and this woman, I'm not in one picture. She's like totally Diana Ross-ing me and Ratner's like, 'Mariah, move the f--- over so Courtney can be in the picture.'"

Ultimately, Carey never actually recorded her vocal part. "I play the rough [cut] and she sings it," Love says of that evening. "I wish to God that there had been a person with a recorder in the room." That makes two of us.

Carey Delivers Like A Down-To-Earth Diva
1 Feb 2010; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

But Mariah Carey wasn't kidding, when, about a half hour into her performance Saturday night, she summoned her hair and makeup team to the Citi Wang Theatre stage for a touch-up. "I know this is an over-the-top moment," Carey said with a grin as she was powder-puffed and fluffed while sipping her vanity brand of Angel champagne from a personalized flute. (Oenophiles take note, the Rose is coming!) And although she later sincerely thanked the crowd for tolerating her prima donna antics it's precisely that mix of diva and daffiness that endears Carey to her fans and that worked to make the hour-and-40-minute show a captivating mix of sparkle, silliness, and vocal pyrotechnics.

Indeed, almost every aspect of the show was an improvement on her last swing through the Hub at the TD Garden in 2006. Even divas have to downsize; the Wang was not quite sold out. But what the show lacked in confetti blasts and video screens it made up for in intimacy. Crucially, the smaller hall meant vastly superior sound quality for her best-selling blend of pop, retro soul, gospel, and hip-hop.

Carey spun through her two-decade career of hits. While there were many images of love, including the joy of her married life with Nick Cannon on "The Impossible", there was no "Vision of Love" as she gave shorter shrift to her early adult contemporary ballads and concentrated mainly on her latter day, fidgety hip-hop soul incarnation.

The seven member band - including three snazzy vocalists - was as tight as Carey's outfits. The tickling percussion and bubbly bass lines of newer tracks like "Touch My Body" were crisply funky and the ballads soared in all the right places. Carey was in strong voice belting out old school pop numbers like "Emotions" and rhythm-heavy newer tunes like "Obsessed" with salty swagger and impressive technique. Carey dug giddily into the saucy kiss-off of the doo-wop laced "It's a Wrap", from her most recent release "Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel".

The physical stiffness that comes with the singer's preference for stiletto heels and second skin wardrobe aside, she seemed more relaxed than ever. As a cadre of dancers and aerialists cavorted around her on the simple stage - a high white-curtained bandstand with pink trim - Carey reveled in the energy of the crowd and in simply singing the songs as opposed to worrying about arena-mandated spectacle. That down-to-earth vibe led to easy, clearly unplanned comic banter. At one point, before dedicating the ballad "Angels Cry" to the Haiti quake victims, Carey quipped, "I'm going to put on my serious hat, which is a really small hat."

The hat may be small, and the songs often frothy and cotton candy sweet, but the voice remains big.

Mariah Carey's Adult Film Confessions
1 Feb 2010; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Mariah Carey is at it again - and we don't mean scoring number one hits. The pop diva once again proves that sometimes, she's better off just belting out the notes than demonstrating her "fun" side. Mariah was recently reported to have called her husband's live New York radio show called "Rollin' With Nick Cannon" on 92.3 Now FM and with a drawling voice, began to talk about porn on the air.

Introducing herself as "Debbie from Long Island", Mariah's unsuspecting husband listened to the caller who, sources said, proclaimed, "Me and my husband have a very good time when we watch porn and I don't think it's bad. I think if it was bad it wouldn't exist! And I think that everyone should experiment with porn!"

Nick eventually realized who the caller was and told listeners, "Ladies and gentlemen, this is how hilarious my wife is." Nick, 29, married the now 40-year-old "imperfect angel" during an April 30, 2008 sunset ceremony at her Bahamian estate.

Mariah's list of strange behavior includes her off-kilter acceptance speech when she won for the Best Breakthrough Performance for her role in "Precious" at the Palm Springs International Film Festival just last January 6. Her slurred speech and not-so-dignified antics, and whose over-five minute clip can be viewed on YouTube, drew reactions from viewers, Facebook users and on Twitterverse. In her appearance at the People's Choice Awards soon after, the pop star attributed her rather loopy speech to "having little splashes" [of champagne] on an empty stomach.

Mariah's latest album, 2009's "Memoires of an Imperfect Angel", has been certified gold by the RIAA in December - already her 15th Gold record. While she is on a mostly sold-out tour called "Angels Advocate" that would take her on the road until the end of February, the release of a reported remix album of the same name has been pushed back from February 23 to March 10.

"Angels Advocate" is said to be an album of duets; two teaser songs reportedly from the album are now streaming on her website: "Angels Cry" featuring Ne-Yo, and "Up Out of My Face" with singer/rapper Nicki Minaj, who will also release her own debut album this year.

On an interesting development, Mariah was said to have tweeted that she would be putting out her own brand of champagne called Angel Champagne (Rose). Perhaps she will have more champagne-fueled speeches in the future. Let's just hope she doesn't take her radio phone-in porn prank just as seriously.

"Face" Facts
29 Jan 2010; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Mariah Carey debuts on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs at No. 97 with "Up Out My Face", featuring Nicki Minaj. The song is the fourth charted entry from "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel", following "Obsessed" (No. 12), "I Want to Know What Love Is" (No. 40) and "H.A.T.E.U." (No. 72). Her "Angels Advocate" remix album streets March 30.

With the new song's launch, Carey extends her R&B/Hip-Hop Songs record among female artists for consecutive years with a debut. She has sent a song onto the chart in each of the 21 years she has appeared on the list, dating to the debut of "Vision of Love" on June 2, 1990.
br> Among fellow female format luminaries, Gladys Knight debuted on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs each year from 1967 through 1989. The first 22 years of her streak, however, are archived under a group billing - Gladys Knight & the Pips - while her 1989 entry was as a solo act.

Aretha Franklin also maintained a prominent presence on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs in all but one year between 1965 and 1989. Her streak of debuts was interrupted by a lack of new entries only in 1984.

Finally! Mimi is Emancipated by Hot New Video!
29 Jan 2010; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Sometimes, Mariah gets it wrong ("H.A.T.E. U"? H.A.T.E.D. those freakin swimsuits. "I Want to Know What Love Is"? I want to know why you're in a baseball stadium full of sad people). And then - she gets it so right. In the new video for "Up Out My Face" from her upcoming duets remix album Angels Advocate, due March 30, there are so very many things to love: the color scheme (Target ad? White Stripes tribute?); the nonsensical (but sexical!) nurses' outfits and Barbie boxes; rising Lil Wayne protege Nicki Minaj getting red, white, and saucypants all over; Nick Cannon (he also directs the clip) reprising his Drumline stomp in the outro. They wear silly outfits, they make silly faces; they have fun.

Wasn't that delicious? Do you not want to put Minaj in your pocket? Are you fonder of Nick Cannon than you were five and half minutes ago? (He also directed his wife in another new video, the less-than-scintillating Ne-Yo collaboration "Angels Cry", but we are letting that one slide; it is a forgiveness kind of day.)

She's Glitterfic
22 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

You simply cannot hate on the wonder that is Mariah Carey. Seriously - the woman's a megastar: five octave voice, awards galore, great body. The world first became majorly enamored with her when she turned one of her troubled relationships into an empowering hit song, "Butterfly" ("spread your wings and prepare to fly, for you have become a butterfly") for which she won a Grammy.

And then there's the "Dreamlover" music video, in which she wore cut-off jean shorts and a tied flannel top. Never before or since has a woman been able to pull off flannel - for Carey it's cute and frolicky, for everyone else it's grungy and Pearl Jam-esque.

The lady was even smart enough to go into hiding after her film/soundtrack Glitter bombed in 2001. After emerging from hibernation, she was awarded with three more Grammys (for the album The Emancipation of Mimi) and a little young husband-cub by name of Nick Cannon.

Sigh... We, too, have always daydreamed about marrying a member of the Nickelodeon teenage sketch show All That. Check Carey out when she performs tonight at 8 at Hard Rock Live (1 Seminole Way, Hollywood). Tickets cost $50 to $130. Visit ticketmaster.com.

Is Mariah Carey Going Back To Record Label Sony?
22 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Word is Mariah Carey is going back to her ex... record label, that is. Because her current album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, got a mixed reception, the pop diva has decided to swap Mercury and put out her next release, Love Songs, with Sony.

A music industry source said: "Tongues are wagging over whether Mariah will stay at Mercury. She had all her biggest hits at Sony including Hero, Dream Lover, Vision of Love. It was where all the magic began for her." The astonishing U-turn will see Mariah, 40, back at the label once headed by ex-hubby Tommy Mottola - to put out an album in tribute to new hubby Nick Cannon on Valentine's Day. You couldn't make it up...

"Bubbly" Personality Not Working For Mariah
19 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Mariah Carey's penchant for funning it up at awards shows this season was a popular topic of conversation during Sunday's Golden Globes after-parties. (For the unaware: Carey, who's been making the rounds with her fellow "Precious" cast mates, been taking advantage of the free champagne at these things, then making rambling, semi-incoherent public statements.)

Carey made no major scene at the Globes or during her brief appearance at the NBC after-party on the Beverly Hilton rooftop, but, because her husband Nick Cannon was so together, her (admittedly amusing) episodes are made even more obvious.

"Mariah isn't the person you would meet at one of these things and you say, 'Yeah, I'd really be interested in her for my upcoming project'," said one television producer. "Nick, on the other hand, I actually have approached him for something I'm working on. And it has nothing to do with him being married to Mariah, it has everything to do with him proving to be better than anyone thought he'd be."

Another television producer agreed: "You'd think that her work in 'Precious', which was impressive for Mariah, would stand on its own and maybe land her some more jobs, but working with someone who you know will be easy to work with is something I certainly consider. Not sure she'd top my list," said the producer.

Mariah Carey's "Control Freak" Caused By Trust Issue
19 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Mariah Carey can understand why she's often labeled a "control freak" - because she finds it difficult to trust others. The "Hero" hitmaker has been plagued by rumors of outlandish behavior throughout her long running career, and Carey fears many people mistake her obsessive attention to detail for something more sinister.

But Carey is adamant her need to control every part of her daily life stems from her inability to trust a job to someone else. She says, "I can be thought of as a control freak. Trust is always an issue for me. It's never been easy for me to trust anybody, and that's kind of a sad thing to say, but it's true."

Her trust issue aside, Mariah Carey was recently awarded with Breakthrough Performance Award at the 21st Annual Palm Spring International Festival Awards for her role in "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire". In the film, she portrays Mrs. Weiss, a social worker who supports 16-year-old Precious.

"Relax, I Only Had Two Sips of Champagne at the Globes"
19 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Mariah Carey - who came under fire for a recent tipsy awards show speech - made sure she didn't go overboard with the bubbly at Sunday's Golden Globe Awards. "I had like two sips!" she told UsMagazine.com at the show. She told Us her sloshy acceptance speech at the Palm Springs International Film Festival earlier this month was blown out of proportion.

"Whatever, that was so not a big deal," said the singer, 40, who recently announced plans to release her own line of bubbly. "Everyone needs to remember the last time they had champagne!"

Carey - who was spotted giving actress Helen Mirren a double kiss on the cheek at the Globes - said the highlight of her night was seeing Precious costar Mo'Nique win for best supporting actress in a drama. "She is real, and so am I!" Carey told Us.

She said she also liked her low-cut Herve Leger by Max Azria gown. "I just like the way it fit and the beading," Carey said when asked how she settled on the frock. "I thought it was pretty cool. Now I'm like stepping on it!" She said the dress was better than one she recently wore. "I couldn't walk up the stairs because it was too tight on my knees," she told Us. "You've got to have stretchy fabric!"

Halle Berry vs. Mariah Carey: Breasts In Show
18 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

There were many winners at the 2010 Golden Globe Awards. Mad Men took home the prize for Best TV Drama; both of Dexter's male leads from season four earned trophies; and Avatar was named Best Picture. But there was one undisputed champion on the night: men everywhere!

Cases of cleavage in point: Halle Berry and Mariah Carey. Each beauty held nothing back on the red carpet. Or, perhaps we should say, they held almost everything back when it came to covering up their breasts.

Fashion Police: Mariah Carey's Golden Globes
18 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

The 2010 Golden Globes were all about the, well, golden globes - so much décolletage on display! Starting off the trend was good old Mariah Carey, who showed off her bronzed girls in a plunging Hervé Léger gown. No surprise, coming from this flashy star.

Not be outdone, Mad Men's Christina Henricks made sure her breast best assets were on display in a ruffly strapless champagne Christian Siriano frock. But we didn't expect to see such low-cut styles on stars like Anna Paquin, who shimmered and sparkled in a deep-V Stella McCartney dress. Or demure Olivia Wilde, playing peekaboo in a skintastic Gucci gown.

Golden Globes Fashion
18 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

At every awards show, there are the looks that nail it and the looks that make everyone wonder. On the Golden Globes red carpet, many ladies had it down, while others (who won't remain nameless) might need to go back to the drawing board before the Oscars.

Olivia Wilde looked both sophisticated and hip in her black chainmail Gucci gown, paired with a high ponytail. Also going for a more unique red-carpet dress was Drew Barrymore in her stunning nude gown with sequined spiked detailing on her hip and shoulder.

"Glee" star Lea Michele made her Golden Globes debut in a fabulous black ball gown by Oscar de la Renta. Ethereal gowns always look beautiful on the red carpet, and Emily Blunt's blush-toned gown with feathery hemline was no exception. Maggie Gyllenhaal got the origami detailing just right in her salmon-colored gown.

There were a number of frilly and silly dresses on the carpet. "Big Love" star Chloë Sevigny was overwhelmed by the ruffles on her dress' neckline. Nicole Kidman's champagne-colored dress looked almost cheap due to its fabric's shininess and bow detailing. Joining the worst-dressed club is fellow "Nine" star Penélope Cruz, who looked dowdy in her black lace gown.

"True Blood" star Anna Paquin's Vegas-ready gold dress didn't seem to fit her, and "Up in the Air" star Anna Kendrick's too-silver tiered dress overwhelmed the star. Mariah Carey's dress was a bit of an over-share; she could have definitely chosen something that covered her décolletage a bit more.

With their pretty standard-issue attire, it's usually hard for the guys to mess up at a show like this. Some of the highlights included Taylor Lautner, Chace Crawford and "True Blood" star Alexander Skarsgård.

Mariah Carey:"When you win something, you celebrate!"
18 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Mariah Carey is still answering questions about slurring that Palm Springs speech, which Ryan Seacrest told her was "colorful" when he interviewed her on the Golden Globes red carpet with her husband Nick Cannon by her side. Noted Jay Manuel on E!: "Mariah brought her own Golden Globes tonight."

"When you win something, you celebrate," she said. "All I had were two glasses (of Champagne)! It was not that bad." She did admit: "If I could go back, would I have one glass instead of two? Yes." She continued. "I didn't realize they put the Champagne on the table so you wouldn't drink it." And then she plugged her own bubbly. "I have my own Champagne - Angel Rose. Go out and get it. It's very, very good."

Mariah Carey At The MGM Grand Review
16 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Mariah Carey has been in the news lately due to erratic behavior at a pair of recent award shows, most notably a woozy acceptance speech when she was honored at the Palm Springs Film Festival January 5 for her acting turn in the film "Precious". She didn't make it easy to forget those images during her trip to the stage Friday night for the first of two nights at the Foxwoods Resort Casino's MGM Grand Theater, where she sounded comfortable easing through her songs and a touch loopy in between them.

Sporting an enormously puffy dress, Carey descended from the rafters on a rope swing to flutter through "Butterfly", a seven-piece band adding cool dressing to its mellow flow. Carey's singing was mostly casual, building to snappy little bursts amid the puffy dance sway of "Shake it Off".

Her voice is a remarkable instrument at its high end, but her songs were frequently undeserving of the unleashing she gave it. Her simmering trip through the mechanical R&B of "Touch My Body" was neither seductive nor enticing, and the only moments that mattered in the expansive "Fly Like a Bird" were the displays of power and sky-scraping pitch with which she dappled its latter portions.

Her singing could nonetheless apply pyrotechnic enticement to an energetic reading of a stop sign, so Carey dolled up the shimmying dance wave of "It's Like That", snapping gamely at its otherwise unremarkable lyrics. With a troupe of as many as ten dancers circling her, she soared and sailed through a meshing of "Sweetest Hangover" and "Heartbreaker", clad in furry sleeves and one of the multiple abbreviated dresses she sported as the evening wore on.

When she wasn't singing, Carey meandered between songs, complaining about the lack of fans onstage to blow hair off of her face, laughing at her own circuitous asides even when there wasn't a punch line, and coming off more flaky than fun. For people who love to watch a superstar fiddle incessantly with her hair (and call stylists onstage when she's tired of doing it herself), it was a treat.

Despite her once-in-a-generation vocal tools, Carey left several numbers shapeless, among them an average take on "Angels Cry" and a reading of "The Impossible (Love Ya Like)" that, despite its swatches of rhythm, was more drowsy than hypnotic. Those moments made it all the more jarring - in a good sense - when she leapt into "Emotions", which stood out for its lively gait as Carey dressed it with a mix of sharp vocal jabs and almost spoken word delivery in some passages.

Carey was almost on the way out when a door hit her in the backside, courtesy of her dancers emerging from one of the set's enormous risers to join her for the percolating, static "Obsessed". That moment somehow caught up to her on the next song, as she stopped "We Belong Together" midway through its first verse and demanded her band begin again. She peppered its flow comfortably to finish her set, and then returned for a laid-back massaging of "Hero" that brought the 90-minute show to an easygoing close.

Mariah Carey returns to the Foxwoods Resort Casino's MGM Grand Theater tonight at 8 P.M. Tickets are $150, $125 and $95. Information: 866-646-0609.

Carey's Sexy On, Off Stage Is Something To Admire
15 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Mariah Carey is beautiful, talented, wealthy and stylish. The Long Island native is anything but the girl next door. Ever since I saw her home on MTV's "Cribs", I have loved Carey, especially her closet. It looked like a clothing store with racks of beautifully organized shoes and clothes. I pictured myself twirling around with shoes and dresses flying out of my arms.

Besides her closet, Carey is the ultimate one-woman act whose vocal chords are those of angels and her style is pure diva glam. This weekend, we are blessed with having Carey, one of the greatest performers on Earth, in Eastern Connecticut at Foxwoods Resort Casino.

If there is one thing about Carey I admire greatly, it's the fact she shows off her curvy figure. The 39-year-old entertainer doesn't let her age get the better of her. So she is almost 40, why shouldn't she be herself? OK, so maybe she should be choosing clothing that covers her bust or at least dress age appropriate the way other older stars such as Jennifer Aniston and Celine Dion do.

The young-at-heart singer still opts to wear sexy ball gowns and tight halter tops. Although, the way she shows off her thick thighs make her the kind of role model young girls need today. Let's be honest, not everyone is a size 0 and Carey proves you can be beautiful at any size. That's why she is so jaw-dropping in everything she wears - she isn't afraid to show off her body.

She may wear risqué things at times, but she does it properly in the way young women today can relate to. If she still has it, she may as well flaunt it - age appropriately that is. Another thing about the perfume master-mind that I like is she knows what works for her body. We mostly see her in not only tight clothing, but halter tops and V-neck styles. Those styles really complement her top-heavy bust and curvy figure. In November, Carey turned heads in a black halter neck fishtail gown by Zac Posen to the L.A. premiere of the movie "Precious".

To her husband Nick Cannon's birthday party in October, she wore a black V-neck mini dress with black platform strappy sandals. She was also photographed last year wearing a Herve Leger boat neck bandage dress with tights, olive green sweater buckled boots and a bomber jacket. The look definitely flattered her figure and her confidence showed through.

When she was on David Letterman's show in November, Carey was photographed outside in a brown V-neck number with brown pointy-toed ankle boots and a large black belt. Carey can relate to the everyday girl, too. In Japan about a year ago, Carey wore a black tee tucked into a pair of Louis Vuitton jeans and black heels.

We see a lot of stars such as Eva Longoria Parker and Eva Mendez in jeans and tees, so it's nice to see Carey in something other than a tight dress. I have also seen the star in a red see-through lace top with jeans and red heels. One critic hated the look, and although the top was a little see-through, I thought she pulled it off nicely. She looked sexy and, once again, confident, and that's important.

I enjoy Carey's style so much that I always love wondering what else she will wear to awards shows or tonight during her concert. I guess we never really know what she will surprise her fans with so we will have to wait and see. But I know one thing is for sure - the stylish Mariah Carey doesn't know how to disappoint. It's just not in her glamorous soul-singing blood.

Trouble in Paradise?
15 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Could there be trouble in the marriage between Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey? Word on the street is that Mariah and Nick will be spending this coming weekend at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. But get this, according to one hotel employee, Nick and Mariah will be sleeping in separate rooms.

You see Mariah rented out three suites. The penthouse suite for herself. Another suite for her wardrobe. And the third suite for Nick Cannon. Look on the bright side. Mariah can't totally hate the dude. At least she's giving him a room the same size as her closet. And you know how she feels about her clothes.

Clooney Mentions Mariah in His Speech
12 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Clooney, for his part, stole the show. First he had to give an award to director Wes Anderson for “Fantastic Mr. Fox.” He kind of wandered onto the stage at Crimson, a large restaurant nightclub on Broadway and 21st St., and gave a rambling little speech due t o the solid part of dinner being delivered way later than the liquid part. He said, “I’m like Mariah Carey, f’d-up right now,” which got a laugh considering Mariah’s similar speech last week in Palm Springs.

It was an odd night for the NYFCC — and this should be noted for future events — because Best Supporting Actress Mo’Nique didn’t show up. No one from “Precious” came to the ceremony, so the group’s chief, Armond White, announced the award and moved on. He said, tersely, “The award is hers.”

PSIFF Organizers Happy Over The Mariah Speech
12 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

After the major hoopla over Mariah Carey earlier this week causing a sensation on the Internet and the traditional media during her appearance at its annual Awards Gala on Tuesday night, the Palm Springs International Film Festival settled into the familiar trappings of "festival" with the Opening Night Gala, "The Last Station" by Michael Hoffman. Helen Mirren, who also received PSIFF honors Tuesday night.

So all in all, a good official opening for the festival, but organizers were still reeling with glee over the Mariah Carey acceptance speech earlier in the week, which brought unpredented media attention to the festival.

"The success of the festival and awards gala would have been unimaginable just a few years ago," said Palm Springs International Film Society Chairman Harold Matzner who also praised his board. "Tuesday's awards were covered - maybe not as much as the Oscars - but like the Golden Globes," he continued to laughs. "Mariah Carey added a billion impressions for us. That would've been like $40 million worth of advertising. I guess we should wait a week before drinking the local water...," he said to more laughs, referencing the pop superstar's champagne-laced acceptance speech days earlier.

Remix of Mariah Carey's single "Up Out My Face" has made its way out. Featuring Nicki Minaj's vocal on the hook, the track is one of the re-recorded singles which will appear in the R&B/Hip-Hop/Pop repackage of Mariah's "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" album.

Earlier this week, a revamped version of Mariah's "Angles Cry" song has also hit the web. In the "Angels Cry" remix, the wife of Nick Cannon who recently won Favorite R&B Artist at 2010 People's Choice Awards joins forces with Ne-Yo.

Both of the re-worked songs will soon get their music video coming out for viewing pleasure. Over 2009 Christmas holiday, Nick brought forward stills from the forthcoming videos for sneak peeks. The "Up Out My Face" images see Mariah and Nicki as Barbie dolls, while the "Angels Cry" pictures have Mariah and Ne-Yo hitting the studio.

Mariah Carey Not Playing Vanessa Hudgens' Mother
8 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Mariah Carey has spoken out to set the record straight on rumors she's to play Vanessa Hudgens' mom in a movie. Recent reports had claimed the pop diva - who won critical acclaim for her role in Precious - would be teaming up with the High School Musical star for a comedy flick based around the popular X-Factor and American Idol TV talent shows.

"Mariah is eager to capitalize on her acclaimed performance in Precious with another movie," a source said in December. "There is one project where she would play one half of a mother and daughter singing duo who audition for a TV talent show. Vanessa Hudgens has already been approached for the daughter role. The only sticking point seems to be whether Mariah feels comfortable playing mom to a teenager. She's a little sensitive when it comes to her age."

But Carey insists this isn't the case. "I haven't heard that," she told Us Weekly magazine when asked about the reports. "I'm doing a lot at the same time. I'm on tour right now and stuff. There has been a lot of stuff that I'm really excited about!"

Mariah Carey Gets Award Speech Re-Do at People's Choice
8 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

On Tuesday at the Palm Springs International Film Festival gala, Mariah Carey took the stage for easily the most awkward acceptance speech of the 2010 awards season so far. Honored for her supporting turn in "Precious", she giggled and leaned on the lectern for support as her eyes went glassy during uncomfortably long pauses. Finally, the diva confessed, "Please forgive me because I'm a little bit ... um, yeah!"

The next night at the People's Choice Awards, Carey explained her clearly inebriated behavior in Palm Springs. As she told reporters backstage, she and "Precious" director Lee Daniels hadn't seen each other in a while, and they got a little carried away while celebrating their reunion.

"We were celebrating and having little splashes [of champagne], and I hadn't eaten, and that's what it was," she said. "We were celebrating the movie and all the exciting stuff going on. There's a time for celebration and a time for not - but really, technically, it's a party atmosphere. We had splashes of champagne. I love Lee, but he's a bad influence."

Carey had a shot at a re-do when she won the People's Choice Award for Favorite R&B Artist. Maybe she had time for a nosh or skipped the bubbly, but she proved capable of delivering a speech sans awkwardness. Hubby Nick Cannon guided her up to the stage, lest her heels get caught in her floor-length gown, leading to an embarrassing tumble. "My real fans know that they are my extended family, and I love them so much," she said in thanks.

Mariah Carey and Ne-Yo's "Angel's Cry" Remix
8 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

The remix for "Angels Cry" featuring Ne-Yo - which is the first official single off of Mariah Carey's upcoming Angels Advocate remix album (due out February 23) - has leaked. If you picked up People's Choice Awards winner Carey's Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel last fall, you'll notice there's not much difference between the "remix" and the original album version of the typically Mariah-esque ballad, save for Ne-Yo chiming in on the second verse.

In fact, what someone ought to do is whip up a dance beat and slap snippets Mimi's drunk speech at the Palm Spring International Film Festival over top of it. That would be a hot single guaranteed to at least chart at #17. At any rate, last night on the PCA red carpet, Mariah was asked to explain her tipsy behavior from the previous evening.

"If people don't understand me and think I'm just this girl who stands by a microphone and sings 'Hero', then they're definitely not gonna get me," Carey said. We'll drink to that.

Mariah's Erratic Behavior Is Raising Eyebrows
7 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Mariah Carey's erratic behavior bar is set high. Topping her 2001 declaration on "Total Request Live" that she would like "one day off when I can go swimming and look at rainbows and, like, eat ice cream" would be difficult. However, her recent behavior is raising eyebrows.

On Tuesday night, Carey accepted an award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Her speech was rambling at best, and involved finger snapping and spontaneous applause. Carey conceded that she might have been a little drunk, but that doesn't explain her behavior behind the scenes at some recent publicity appearances.

One makeup artists who worked with Carey in recent weeks said, "She showed up in the morning to start getting ready and she wasn't stable on her feet. She was rambling and not making much sense, but she didn't seem drunk at all. She just seemed out of it."

Another source with access to Carey's dressing room at a different appearance said Carey was definitely uncomfortable around staff trying to help her. "People were just asking if she needed anything - nothing intrusive, just people doing their jobs - and and she either ignored them completely or seemed confused. But when the cameras were on, she was back to herself."

Mariah Carey's People Choice Awards Mishap
7 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Mariah Carey looked stunning at the 2010 People's Choice Awards, no question. However, when she was called to the stage to accept an award, we officially had on our hands the first (and, to our knowledge, the only) wardrobe malfunction of the evening.

Carey gathered her extra-long dress in her hands, which did little to help the star walk in the mermaid-like gown. Husband Nick Cannon exchanged worried glances with Carey, and immediately stood to escort his wife on stage, holding her steady as she shuffled down the aisle.

Carey thanked her husband in her acceptance speech, but we were amused when she thanked him "...especially for helping me with this dress!" Next time, Miss Mariah, be sure to try it on before the big night!

Mariah Carey: Tight again at People's Choice Awards
7 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

My husband is by no means a fashion critic. But I believe he spoke for an entire nation tonight when, watching Mariah Carey try to haul her body up to the stage at the People's Choice Awards in a skin-tight gown, he asked: "Why do people wear shit like that?" Why indeed.

It was the second night in a row that Madame Butterfly made a spectacle of herself at an awards show. On Tuesday she puzzled the crowd at the Palm Springs Film Festival Awards gala with a staggeringly sloppy speech given, everyone assumes, under the influence of mucho alcohol. Or something, uh, debilitating.

She seemed slightly more aware of her surroundings at the People's Choice awards show. Literally, hubby Nick Cannon had to hold her arm and keep her upright as she struggled to scooch her way to the stage from their seats in the audience. If her white gown had been any tighter, she'd have been naked.

Once on stage to receive her crystal trophy for Favorite R&B Artist, she thanked her fans, God, her handlers and Nick "for helping me with this dress because it's a drama! I didn't mean to do this." She went on to slyly thank Nick for "many other things I probably shouldn't mention". Here's hoping she gets her shit together for the Oscars.

'Precious' May Win Oscar
6 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

We're supposed to feel some revulsion about the food scenes in Precious, but they belong in the movie, filmed the way they are. African-American families consider macaroni and cheese all but one of the basic food groups. It's rare to sit down to a largish black family reunion or gathering without seeing a bowl on the table. Few people of any race eat the way they eat in Precious' house, but they do, and that's the point. Daniels' close-ups of food are a visceral way of communicating the nature of the diet that has made Precious fat against her will. Those shots are central to the odds against Precious; today in America, fat is probably more widely discriminated against than color.

As for her fantasies: Does anyone have realistic fantasies? What would be the point? Those scenes act as relief from the implacable horror of her life, for Precious and for us as viewers. Could we take two hours of her misery?

I've also read that it's unlikely anyone like her would encounter mentors as physically attractive as Mariah Carey and Paula Patton, even as "dressed down" as they are. People making that criticism may not have been around many middle-class African-Americans. Daniels and his casting directors may have known more about the African-American norm than some audience members. Gabourey Sidibe says she has known girls like Precious and teachers like those, and I believe her. Mo'Nique's mother is also, sadly, not rare. Sapphire's novel is inspired by truth and observation.

Of course it's no defense of a movie to say it's based on fact. Many good films are; many bad ones are not. I believe the strength of Precious is in its visceral impact. For many viewers, it works so well because it breaks trough filters and connects directly. In a very different way, that's also true of The Hurt Locker, and that's why one of those two, or Up in the Air, will probably win as Best Film. Despite its many awesome accomplishments, Avatar doesn't compete in that arena. Does anyone give a damn about the romance between Jake and Neytiri? What does the future hold for them? With the ship not functioning on Pandora, Neytiri will be left with a very expensive dead love doll on her hands.

Mariah Gets Carried Away At Palm Springs gala
6 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Mariah Carey lived up to her sometimes loopy reputation at the Palm Springs International Film Festival awards as she gave a long, rambling acceptance speech after being named Breakthrough Actress for her performance in "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire."

Carey, teetering in a skin-tight, black-beaded full-length Herve Leger gown, was escorted onto the stage Tuesday night, and at the podium, greeted her presenter and "Precious" director Lee Daniels with a little dance and a big hug.

Carey hesitated for a few seconds, looked to the ceiling, sighed and said, "Please forgive me, because I'm a little bit, um ..." An audience member finished the sentence for her with an obscenity, to which Carey replied, "Yeah!" adding a long, hearty laugh.

"Oooooooh, my goodness!" she bellowed.

For the next few minutes, Carey rambled on about first reading "Push," about meeting author Sapphire, and about meeting one of the night's other honorees, Academy Award-winner Helen Mirren, whom Daniels said turned down the "Precious" role.

In the midst of praising Daniels' work, Carey spontaneously burst into applause.

"Sorry," she told Daniels. "Sometimes I get a little ..." Carey then stopped cold to snap her fingers, then added "... you know, difficult." And then she giggled again.

Carey went on to share a story about how Daniels told her to play the part, he needed her to listen to him. She was trying to elaborate, and couldn't come up with the words. She motioned to her face and said, "What do you call it?" When Daniels said he told her to remove her makeup, she said, "You could take my makeup off and I don't look like that (expletive) from the thing," referring to her "Precious" character. "Oh, God," Daniels moaned, turning away from Carey.

A full minute before Carey and Daniels finally left the stage, the audience had begun to applaud them off. "I thank you all for all listening to my little spiel," Carey said, wearily, "and God bless you."

Seconds later, host Mary Hart did her best to bring the ceremony back to Earth. "Who says we don't have fun here?" Hart asked, with a huge smile. The evening's other winners included "Up in the Air" director Jason Reitman, "Up in the Air" actress Anna Kendrick, "Hurt Locker" actor Jeremy Renner and "Inglourious Basterds" director Quentin Tarantino. Mirren was honored with a Career Achievement Award.

Carey didn't return to the stage Tuesday night, but her presence was felt for the remainder of the night. Before handing out a music award to songwriter-producer T Bone Burnett, actor Sean Penn quipped, "Think anything's going to make YouTube tonight?"

Mariah Carey Is People's Choice -- And Ours
6 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Mariah Carey is all set to pick up her People's Choice Award tonight on CBS. She's a winner, I'm told, for Best R&B singer.

What? Yes, everyone seems to know who's won those People's Choice Awards before they arrive at the studio. Who votes in this thing? "The voting public," a Hollywood publicist replied with a smirk. Well, whatever.

Mariah's had a big year, especially because of her surprisingly understated performance in "Precious." She's picking up Breakthrough Performance awards everywhere, and now, suddenly, directors want Mariah Carey. It's a far cry from her debut acting debacle years ago in "Glitter."

It's too bad Mariah didn't get pushed more for an Oscar or Globe in "Precious," since she's also supported the movie like crazy. She's shown up anywhere they've asked her to go. And she didn't require a fee to be there, either!

One place where Mariah did not have a big hit last year: music. Her most recent album just didn't take off despite the witty lead single, "Obsessed."

But this is what Mariah has to do next, I think, to get back on the charts: a straight ahead album of real singing, no fluttering, no hip hop. She has to get a really musical producer — like her buddy Randy Jackson — and record some actual, structured songs. She might even cover some classics. But the days of ethereal scatting over this and that, I think, are over. Let the voice be heard!

As for the People's Choice: if you watch this show, you'll know who's won right away by who's in the audience waiting to get their award. Since Hugh Jackman, Sandra Bullock, Carrie Underwood, and Taylor Swift are already being promoted by CBS, you can guess they won their categories. Surprise! They're not hanging around that studio for their health!

Note: The 36th Annual People's Choice Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theater L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California tonight at 9:00pm ET/PT on CBS.

Richard Montoya on Precious
6 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

"Precious" has a stripped-down realism that doesn't have a filter on it, that allows us to get in the head of this young girl whom we've seen at bus stations and subways, and more often than not, we look the other way. There's another teenage mom with two kids. We tend to scrutinize, vilify and judge and look down at the precious girls of our society. That movie allows us to care and go inside the world and go room by room into these dark little apartments and schools and hospitals where there's life.

Watching "Precious," I could feel the fierce authenticity. Geoffrey Fletcher knew and observed this world and may have even lived it. This is a dilemma for writers of color. I'm told, "Get out of your Chicano world." But that's what I know. I know the Latino experience. I don't want to let go of that. "Write what you know" is what I learned at the Sundance Screenwriters Lab. That is so important. And Fletcher respected that world of Precious without judgment, and that's what makes his screenplay burst off the screen. That movie haunted me and transported me. I also greatly admired the director, Lee Daniels, and the performances. When Mariah Carey can appear in a film without a stitch of makeup, it is a brave new world.

Philly Reviews Mariah's Borgata Show
4 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Mariah Carey at the Borgata
By David R. Stampone

The altogether dazzling yet disarmingly human super-diva Mariah Carey was checking some text onstage at the Borgata's sold-out Event Center Saturday night. "I've written a few songs in my life," she quipped in understated explanation. "And sometimes the set list changes."
So it had since her New Year's Eve show at Madison Square Garden. For this date, beginning in earnest her "Angels Advocate" tour, her first live jaunt in more than three years, Carey changed the order and swapped five different songs into her 18-tune set.

One - the romance-terminating "It's a Wrap," from 2009's Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, her 12th studio album - was a highlight, allowing the singer to soulfully flaunt her vocal prowess out in front of the occasionally overwhelming backup voices.

Also laudable was the acted-out choreography of a diva's dismissal of her pleading, come-home-drunk guy (one of the nine dancers) with wised-up lines ("I was oh so acquiescent, but I learned my lesson") and her famously fluttering mic-free hand.

More song-specific and Mariah-centric thespian conceits would be a great concert idea, giving Carey enlivening focus for each number - and answering the complaints that the native Long Islander is too inert in performance. (And we know the woman can act, even under pressure: She went from the career-tailspin-inducing cinematic disaster that was her 2001 bomb, Glitter, to awards for her role as a social worker in last year's acclaimed Precious.)

Then again, the 2,200 excited fans in Atlantic City didn't seem to mind the statuesque Carey just walking the stage, casually bantering a bit but mostly communicating via her five-octave range, including the sparingly deployed pyrotechnics of her ultrahigh "dolphin squeal" whistle register.

Such live staples as her deliriously received 1991 smash "Emotions" - an unprecedented fifth consecutive No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, one of her countless chart-topping feats - would be unthinkable without those notes.

The closing encore was the inevitable "Hero," but oddly, even though Carey's new record is dedicated to Michael Jackson, she never did her renowned cover of the Jackson Five's "I'll Be There." (Trey Lorenz did emerge midset with Jackson's "Rock With You" in tribute while Carey changed costumes backstage.)

However, Carey got down with some Motown by effectively mashing Diana Ross' "Love Hangover" with her own dancey "Heartbreaker."

And sharing the state of her heart as always, she performed the live debut of "The Impossible," dedicated to her rapper-actor-radio-DJ husband, Nick Cannon (who hosted an after-party at the Borgata's swanky mur.mur club).

Pixie Lott: I'd Scream If I Saw Mariah Carey
4 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Pixie Lott admits she'd still get starstruck if she bumped into one of her idols. But the singer would do her best to play it cool. "I saw Beyoncé at the EMAs but I would never go up, elbowing people out of the way and try to say hi," she says. "She would be like, 'Umm, hi, who are you?' Also, I'd definitely scream if I saw Mariah Carey."

Pixie, 18, is still getting used to having fans. "I think it's really funny when people are trying to take a picture or s omething and their hands are shaking," she adds. "It's weird for me because it's still all so novel."

Press of Atlantic City Reviews Mariah's Borgata Show
3 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Mariah Carey surprisingly dull in show at Borgata
By Scott Cronick

Mariah Carey may be a pop diva, but much of the sold-out crowd at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa treated her like she was a deity on Saturday night.

Constantly taking pictures and video, screaming at the top of their lungs in appreciation and holding up signs to express their devotion, Carey's fans are undoubtedly loyal.

And they certainly have plenty of good reasons. Carey is to pop what Led Zeppelin is to rock, what Metallica is to metal and what Johnny Cash is to country.

Her resume doesn't lie. The Long Island, N.Y., native scored 18 No. 1 singles in the United States, second only to The Beatles and ahead of Elvis. Her 12 studio albums have sold more than 62.5 millions copies in the U.S., and earned her five Grammy awards as well as the title of most successful artist of the 1990s in the U.S. by Billboard.

Yet here was the 40-year-old songstress in Borgata's 2,200-seat Event Center. Like Madonna – arguably her only competition as the most popular female artist of all time – she should be playing arenas.

So why is she doing a mostly theater tour?

The truth is ... she's a bore. While Carey clearly has unbelievable pipes – her five-octave vocal range was on full display and flawless Saturday night – she has the stage presence of a slug. An attractive slug, but a slug nonetheless.

Surrounded by a nine-member dance team that was at worst clunky and at best average, Carey's idea of being a headliner consists of standing on stage, singing her heart out and letting the dancers do all of the work.

For the fans who are content with hearing her belt out unbelievable vocals, it works. For casual fans looking for a good show, Carey is certainly not that kind of entertainer.

On the road for the first time since her 2006 comeback tour, "The Adventures of Mimi," Saturday was Carey's second stop on her "Angels Advocate Tour" to support her new album, "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel."

Carey, who made four costume changes but opened wearing a white dress partly made of feathers, rolled out a solid mix of her chart smashes, fan favorites and new tracks, showing her diversity and stellar range.

Although she pulled out songs that went all the way back to 1991, a large part of Carey's 18-song set came from "Memoirs" and 2005's "The Emancipation of Mimi."

Particularly memorable tracks off "Mimi" included the Usher-like "Shake It Off;" "It's Like That," which fuses old-school hip-hop from Run-DMC; and "We Belong Together," a No. 1 hit that cemented her career comeback.

All three of those tunes, as well as the fan favorite "Always Be My Baby," had one thing in common: Jermaine Dupri, who co-wrote them and served as guest DJ at an afterparty at Borgata's mixx nightclub.

Off "Memoirs," her latest singles "Obsessed" and "H.A.T.E.U." – Having A Typical Emotional Upset – seemed to get the biggest crowd reaction, while "Angels Cry" and "The Impossible," which she dedicated to husband Nick Cannon, who also performed at a Borgata afterparty, landed flat.

Carey was not shy about pulling out the big guns either, including at least a half-dozen No. 1 songs, all memorable in their own way.

"Touch My Body," off last year's "E=MC2," was simple pop at its best; "Heartbreaker" had the crowd on its feet; "Emotions" showed her fun, disco side and her ability to still hit every high note; and her signature "Hero" was a fitting finale.

Aside from her voice, there were other upsides. For the opener, Carey was lowered from the rafters on a giant swing. She drank Champagne and reclined on a couch while joking about her diva status during "Subtle Invitation": "Do they expect me to stand up for the whole show? They call me a diva because ... I guess I am one." She threw in a cover of the Diana Ross smash "Love Hangover" to lead into "Heartbreaker." And Trey Lorenz' cover of Michael Jackson's "Rock With You" was well done.

There also were some differences from her opening show at Madison Square Garden. Aside from "The Impossible," she also offered "Honey," the Latin-infused "My All" and one of the night's best, "It's a Wrap." And she surprisingly did not perform "Fantasy," one of her biggest hits and a show staple.

Carey certainly has had her share of ups and downs in a very public life that included her divorce from Columbia Records exec Tommy Mottolla, a well-documented emotional breakdown, the bomb of her movie "Glitter" and a period of dipping success. But she remains on top of the pop world for a variety of reasons: She keeps reinventing herself, she aligns herself with people like Dupri and she remains a stunning beauty.

But the main reason she's still a superstar is that she's way too talented to go away. If she could only amp up her stage presence, Madonna may even have something to worry about.

Mariah Carey Fulfills Her Diva Status
2 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Mariah Carey chose to see in the new year in true diva fashion - with plenty of costume changes, glitz, glamour, champagne and confetti. The singer was performing at Madison Square Gardens on New Year's Eve and told the crowd: "They say I'm a diva, so might as well act like one."

Mariah, who turns 40 this year, changed into sparkling outfits including a floor-length, low-cut silver gown, a tight red mini dress and a strapless white dress encrusted with gems. During the evening she poked fun at herself and, according to Rolling Stone magazine, told the crowd, "I need some lipstick real quick and my hair fluffed."

She performed tracks from her back catalogue and stopped a song mid-way to count down the new year with blasts of confetti, streamers and balloons. After attempting to sing Auld Lang Syne, her husband Nick Cannon joined her on stage for her first kiss of the new year.

He was there at the side of the stage to see her performance, which end with a rousing performance of Hero. She left the stage on the arm of Nick after wishing everyone a happy 2010 and shouting "I love you all!"

New York Times: A Pop Star In Her Own Time Zone
2 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

The holiday happens when Mariah Carey says it happens, which is why, on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden, the New Year's Eve countdown was maybe a minute after the fact. And more important, why Ms. Carey began the show suspended above the crowd in a red sled, drenched in red tulle, singing, "All I Want for Christmas Is You."

What, you're going to complain? Ms. Carey could have delivered that song in the middle of August and still pulled it off. Twenty years after her debut album, she remains a ferocious, inventive singer, right even when she's wrong. And surprisingly, she has become a versatile one, too, as famous for the epic-scale ballads she first made her name with as for her slick entrée into crossover hip-hop soul.

"Some people like my slow songs, and some people like my fast songs, and it gets so confusing," she said after "Touch My Body," early in her set. "What should I do?"

The answer was slow it down — maybe a little too soon — with the delicately strained "H.A.T.E.U.," from her new album, "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" (Island). Throbbing and deliberate as a heartbeat, it was Ms. Carey at her isolated best, and a reminder that she's a complete anomaly in modern pop: an R&B singer who doesn't have to dance to prove her point. Apart from a few sashays during "Shake It Off," she barely broke form here, even when the tempos crept up to sweat level. (She made savvy use of her quicker older material, like "Make It Happen" and "Fantasy [remix]," which the band played during costume-change interludes until she rejoined them.)

So many of Ms. Carey's early hits were sturdy, bombastic and slow, and even though she has successfully sped up (and lightened up) in the last decade, it often feels as if she missed the sheer scale of her old material. Here, her band was on an elevated platform far behind her, and she was only sometimes surrounded by dancers. For large swaths of the night, she stood alone, and still.

Balladry is all but dead in popular music — Susan Boyle notwithstanding — but Ms. Carey has learned how to game the system with songs that appear to have multiple tempos all at once, languorous vocals set against steady beats. In this grand setting it was clearer than ever that tracks like "We Belong Together" and "Angels Cry (remix)" are merely slow records masquerading as fast.

There wasn't quite enough time to explore such nuances, though: this was only half a concert, in spirit and in length. It was casual, with bursts of dancer disarray, and Ms. Carey talking to the crowd about the instructions she was receiving through her earpiece. After the countdown, dozens of friends and crew members came out onstage to dance even while Ms. Carey sang, making her into a disco diva delivering from the middle of the floor.

That lasted for a distractingly long spell, until Ms. Carey closed the night, a bit abruptly, with a sinus-clearing, room-shattering version of her 1993 hit "Hero," one of her most titanic ballads.

It hushed the crowd, but when Ms. Carey finished, she was back to giggles, picking up the banter with her husband, Nick Cannon, that she'd been having on and off since the countdown. They should be filmed, always, their blend of cute and beleaguered consistently entertaining.

A few minutes after midnight, when the crowd had been doused with confetti, she told Mr. Cannon that she wanted more. "Some more confetti?" he asked incredulously. "I'm going to see if I can work that out." She made a comment about her dress, to which Mr. Cannon replied: "You look hot in that. Madison Square Garden, tell her how sexy she looks!"

At the end of the night, Mr. Cannon tried to lead his wife offstage through a door at the back, but she resisted, saying she wanted to walk off the side, through the cluster of friends who had been standing there since the countdown. She play-pushed him aside and marched off. Mr. Cannon gave a knowing look to the crowd, pointed at his wife, grinned madly and ran after her.

Rolling Stone Review:Madison Square Garden Concert

Mariah Carey Trades Show for Celebration on NYE in New York
Mariah Carey emerged on New Year's Eve at New York's Madison Square Garden in the most fantastically fairy-tale like manner possible: suspended above the audience in a red sleigh, singing her remixed version of "All I Want For Christmas Is You." It was a moment of blissful spectacle befitting the special night and Carey's fascination with perpetual childhood. "Eternally 12!" she exclaimed several songs later, spotting a sign in the crowd announcing her motto (she'll turn 40 years old in March). A few seconds later she showed off another of her signature personality traits. "I need some lipstick real quick and my hair fluffed," she proclaimed, adding, "They say I'm a diva so, might as well act like one."

A crew of male dancers joined Carey for "Shake It Off" and "Touch My Body," after which she addressed the crowd — which included Precious star Gabourey Sidibe — for the first of what would become many times. Noting the title of the next song "might be off-putting, I don't mean it to you," she launched into "H.A.T.E.U." from her most recent album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, and then vanished for a costume change while her dancers grooved to "Make It Happen" (she returned in time to belt the closing verse).

Carey is known more for her vocal prowess and huge personality than her stage shows, and the concert — the first date on her Angels Advocate Tour, her first since 2006's The Adventures of Mimi trek — delivered far more on the big notes and bizarre monologues than impressive choreography and set design. She requested a drink before "Subtle Invitation" ("I need some champagne, I don't care what Debbie Allen says"), complained about her mic pack ("If this thing falls off my dress one more time I'm going to beat you"), and mused on the passage of time ("I never thought I'd live to see 2010 because I'm eternally 12").

Images of Ol' Dirty Bastard rapping his intro to "Fantasy" filled the video screens at two minutes to midnight, and Carey began the song, then suddenly stopped to count down to the new year as blasts of confetti, streamers and balloons filled the air. When the air had cleared, Carey soldiered on with "Obsessed" and "Migrate" as her crew milled around the stage, dancing with each other and partying in 2010 (at one point, they broke into a spontaneous Electric Slide). Carey's husband Nick Cannon rocked from side to side behind a set of turntables, encouraging the crowd and Mariah to finish strong. "You look sexy in that!" he shouted to the singer before "Emotions" after she admitted she preferred a different dress.

The flood of unrehearsed comments didn't phase the crowd, who had come to see Carey in all her off-the-cuff diva glory. From her stream-of-consciousness voicemails on her Website to her legendary Cribs appearance, Carey has given her fans something few pop artists are willing to reveal: honesty. She managed to put all the distractions behind her for a glorious final song, 1993's "Hero." Then she took Cannon's arm, yelled her thanks to the sold-out arena ("I love you so much!") and ambled offstage.

Mariah Sleeps in the Nude
1 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

She was almost booed out of Hollywood after Glitter, but Mariah Carey can act. Really. Don't believe us? Check out the homely, tough-talking social worker in Precious. She spoke to Ramin Setoodeh.

Hello?
All right, green tea. Hiiiii. How are you? It's early for me, darling, you have to understand.

What time is it?
It's late probably to you.

It's 1 in the afternoon!
I'm adjusting. I'm adjusting.

You've wanted to act for a long time, even before...
Yes. I've always wanted to. Not to cut you off, I'm sorry. I'm bad. When you have an opera singer for a mother, it's kind of like, sort of like, you cut people off. Cause she's grand, darling. She's very grand. So yes, I always have wanted to act. I didn't have the right support system, but maybe I needed that much of a fall to get where I needed to go.

And by "fall", do you mean Glitter?
Yes. That period of time was just a mess, with Virgin Records and la-la-la-la. It is a la-la-la-la now because they don't exist.

How do you learn how to act?
I've been studying for a long time. I was studying prior to Glitter. I'm not blaming anyone, but the script wasn't even done when we started that movie, and it was all over the place.

What was hard about Precious?
Aside from not using all my own mannerisms? I don't think anyone is going to care so much if an actress who exclusively acts does something with their hand that is reminiscent of two movies ago. If I was suddenly moving my hand up, they'd be like, she didn't get it.

What mannerisms did you get rid of?
I have so many Mariah-isms. I talk with my hands a lot. I'm very over the top, what can I say? This character is very cut and dried.

She wears no makeup, right?
It's beyond no makeup. Did you not see the redness under my eyes, nose - and the mustache? That's the only thing I care about. I lost all the vanity stuff, but when people really started analyzing, they have to ask about the mustache. Why is it important? Oh, my goodness, it's hideous. That's not my no-makeup look - just FYI. Could you let your readers know?

That's not what your husband, Nick Cannon, sees in the morning.
I don't think Nick would be here if that was my look.

Are you going to do comedies?
Darling, I want to, but I got to find a fabulous director. Actually, Brett [Ratner] better put me in his next movie, or I'll beat his behind.

What do you watch when you're at home in your pajamas?
You visualize me in pajamas?

Is that wrong?
I have some from the Beverly Hills Hotel. They're cute. But I tend to go the other route.

What do you mean?
I like lingerie.

I thought maybe nothing at all.
Yeah, we do that, too.

Mariah's New Direction
1 Jan 2010 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Where pop divas are concerned, thinking small is not usually a part of their DNA. Mariah Carey, however, has done just that, with her restrained performance as a plain-Jane caseworker in "Precious", the much-acclaimed independent film directed by Lee Daniels.

Carey's change-of-pace role won her positive reviews and helped erase memories of her hugely misguided star turn in the 2001 big-screen bomb, "Glitter". "It was cool because a lot of people say they don't recognize me in the film," Carey told Rolling Stone about "Precious". "They don't know it's me and, to me, that was a great gift (Lee) gave me; to be able to really go that far away from who I am."

Carey, who makes the second stop on her North American tour at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Sap Saturday, Jan. 2, also shows a low-key side on her new album. In "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" (Island), Carey pulls her trademark seven-octave pipes back, focusing on the "honey" in her voice.

The release, for which Carey co-wrote all the tracks, doesn't skimp on the presentation, however. It includes a CD with 17 tracks, including a cover of Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is"; a second CD with a video clip for the first single, "Obsessed"; and a 36-page magazine produced by Elle about Carey.

Although some critics have found the new record to be too derivative of her successful 2005 comeback album, "The Emancipation of Mimi", Los Angeles Times writer Ann Powers found much to recommend in the project's change of pace. "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel will stand out in Carey's catalog as an experiment that illuminates her place in the pantheon without either boosting it or damaging it," Powers wrote. "I wouldn't be surprised if, a decade from now, Carey cites this effort as a personal favorite. It's that kind of wholly decent effort: a self-exploration that settles on its unpretentious insights by not pushing too hard."

Whether the general listening public will ever cotton to "Memoirs" is another story. The new record has sold just 344,000 copies in the U.S., a small fraction of Carey's staggering career sales of 140 million albums and singles - the most of any female artist.

According to MTV News, a remixed version, to be sold exclusively by Target, is being prepped for a February release. Meanwhile, the possibility Carey will leave her longtime label, Island Def Jam, is circulating around the blogosphere. WHY WE LOVE IT
We couldn't decide which was more luxe: Mariah Carey's fluffy, curvy waves, or the feathery shrug she had on her shoulders. Either way, it was a winning look: The star took home an award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Precious. Work it, Mimi!

Mariah Carey Shows Off Her Curves In A Spangly Frock
30 Dec 2009 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

You'll never spot Mariah Carey in harem pants, or a pair of nifty brogues, but she certainly knows how to do old-school glamour when she has to. Snapped at the Capri Hollywood International Film Festival, Mariah did what she did best - pulled a super sexy pose in a spangly frock.

She's certainly got the Marilyn Monroe-esque curves for such an outfit, and in the world of androgynous models (agyness, we mean you) and just plain crazy (Lady GaGa, step up), it's nice to see someone just looking a bit fabulous every once in a while. Mainly we're just still impressed with her doves and kittens rider when she went to turn on the lights at Westfield last month.

Mariah to play Vanessa Hudgen's mother?
30 Dec 2009 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

Mariah Carey is in talks to play Vanessa Hudgens' mother in a movie. The Obsessed singer - who won critical acclaim for her role in Precious - is set to team up with the High School Musical star for a comedy flick based around the popular X-Factor and American Idol TV talent shows.

"Mariah is eager to capitalize on her acclaimed performance in Precious with another movie," revealed one insider.

Gabourey going to Mariah's NYE Concert
30 Dec 2009 ; & Seymone ; Category; News ;

After donating some energy to their New Year's Eve fund, Gabourey sat down with PopWrap to talk about her crazy year.

PW: [laughs] OK, so you're here at the Duracell Power Lab helping power Times Square's iconic NYE ball -- but where will you be when it drops?
Gabourey: I'm going to be at Mariah Carey's concert. She's playing Madison Square Garden and I have a sick fascination with Trey Songz, who is opening up for her. Like [gasp] what if I meet him that night?

PW: I'm sure Mariah can hook that up -- what's your favorite song of hers?
Gabourey: "Always Be My Baby." Wait, OK, no, she's got a million. My all, all-time favorite ... "Fantasy" is a really good one. Oh, and that song with Brian McKnight, "Whenever You Call" was amazing.
